Building relationships
I enjoy understanding what makes a business tick - looking at sales, marketing and operations to get to the heart of its story. Just as much, I love meeting new people and learning what motivates them. Every founder has a different journey and hearing those stories is one of the best parts of my role. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work with people not just in Birmingham but across the UK and overseas - it’s shown me there’s a whole world beyond the A38!
Background
I began my career in Birmingham as an apprentice in BDO’s audit team, gaining experience across sectors such as manufacturing, insurance, hospitality and automotive. After qualifying as an accountant, I moved into BDO’s Business Restructuring team - helping businesses navigate financial challenges and make strategic decisions.
Then came a big change of scenery: 18 months in sunny Brisbane, where I worked on advisory and transactional deals in industries ranging from agriculture and retail to property and tourism (I did manage to find time for the beach!). After returning to the UK, I rejoined BDO before moving to Mercia Ventures' West Midlands team in 2025, where I now support ambitious businesses on their growth journeys.
