Suiso announces first commercial sale of gas decarbonisation system to the AMRC

Suiso the Sheffield-based cleantech company,  announces the commercial sale of its gas decarbonisation system to the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (“AMRC”).  Using proprietary technology combining microwave energy and a catalyst, the system reduces carbon emissions from existing gas-based industrial processes without requiring costly infrastructure changes.

Industrial heat accounts for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.  In the UK, industrial processes contribute around 10–12% of total emissions, the majority of which is heat-related.  For high-temperature processes, electrification is often not yet viable—making emissions reduction from existing gas-based operations a key challenge.

Suiso’s approach uses microwave energy and a proprietary catalyst to remove carbon from natural gas prior to combustion, capturing it in solid form rather than emitting it as CO₂.  This carbon is upgraded by Suiso into activated carbon — a high-value material used in water purification, air treatment and industrial filtration.

The deployment at the AMRC reflects the challenge of reducing emissions from high-temperature industrial processes, where practical solutions remain limited.  Following an extensive evaluation, the AMRC selected Suiso’s system as it delivers meaningful emissions reductions while remaining compatible with existing operations.

As a leading industrial research centre working with a wide range of manufacturers, the AMRC will use the system to gain valuable insights into the challenges arising from the “fuel switch” – the transition from traditional natural gas to low-carbon alternatives.

By hosting Suiso’s technology, the AMRC provides a dedicated testbed environment where industrial partners can test and de-risk this transition within their own operations, ensuring a seamless introduction into their facilities.

This sale is the latest example of increasing demand for practical, cost-effective decarbonisation solutions for gas-based processes, positioning Suiso strongly in this market.

Stuart McKnight, CEO of Suiso, commented:
“We are grateful to the AMRC for their confidence in our technology and for deploying it in their operations today and helping drive its adoption across the industries they support over time. This sale marks a significant milestone in the transition to cost-effective, low-carbon industrial processes.  Converting emissions into value is what we do at Suiso.”

“We would also like to thank the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority for its continuing support, again highlighting South Yorkshire’s leading role in industrial decarbonisation.”

Matthew Cawood, Head Of Castings at the AMRC commented:
“High-temperature industries have traditionally been the hardest to decarbonise, but finding a solution is now a necessity.  We are adopting Suiso’s technology to demonstrate to our partners that they can slash emissions immediately without needing to reinvent their entire operation.”

“By integrating this system into our work at the AMRC, we’re proving that businesses can meet their environmental goals while keeping their production lines running and staying competitive. We look forward to working with our partners and Suiso to de-risk and demonstrate the impact of this technology and drive its adoption across the manufacturing sector”.
