Why we invested – Semble

Helping healthcare professionals get back to what matters

If you work in healthcare, this might sound familiar. You spend your day juggling patient care with endless admin, chasing lab results, filling in forms, switching between clunky systems that don’t speak to each other. For every eight hours you spend with patients, there’s another five to eight hours of paperwork.

It’s no surprise so many clinicians are burning out or leaving the profession altogether. And it’s patients who suffer too, with longer wait times and overstretched services.

Semble is changing that.

In October, we led the Series B round for Semble, a Healthtech start-up building more than just another electronic health record system. It’s laying the foundations for a more connected, efficient and patient-centred healthcare system, one that’s driven by automation, system interoperability and data.

Six months on from our investment, we wanted to reflect on why we backed them and what we’ve discovered since.

Growing demand, stretched systems

Healthcare workers across the UK and France are under immense pressure. Both countries are seeing record levels of burnout. The number of clinicians is declining, while patient demand continues to rise. In the UK, the average wait to see a GP is now more than two weeks and growing.[1]

Much of the stress stems from the administrative burden. It’s not just a paperwork issue, it’s a system-wide inefficiency that affects patient care, staff wellbeing and financial performance.

Meanwhile, more patients are turning to private clinics to avoid long waits[2]. We’re also seeing healthcare become increasingly decentralised. There’s growth of specialist care, mental health, aesthetics, occupational health, allied care and digital health. These providers – whether private or public –  need modern digital systems that are scalable and interoperable.

Semble is built for this shift.

What makes Semble different

Deep interoperability

Semble has intentionally designed its platform to integrate with a wide range of third-party systems; from labs and payment providers to pharmacies and hospital software. This positions it as the digital spine of clinical operations, adaptable for both large hospitals and small, fast-moving private clinics. As a result, Semble can be both the agile solution for smaller organisations and the highly integrated system for enterprise customers[3].

Built for automation and AI

Semble’s infrastructure isn’t static, it’s designed to evolve. The platform supports next-generation tools such as workflow automation and AI medical scribes like Heidi Health. By embedding these into day-to-day clinical processes, Semble is helping to ease pressure across more than 75 medical specialties.

Results that speak for themselves

Clinics using Semble report up to 75% reductions in admin time and, in some cases, double the number of patient consultations. That translates to better care, increased revenue and higher staff satisfaction. And a whole lot of happy health practices.

What’s happened since we invested

Since October, Semble has continued to grow at pace:

  • The team has expanded their account base and continued to move further into the enterprise segment, working with larger providers who need reliable, scalable systems.
  • Early wins in France show the platform’s adaptability across markets, opening the door for further European growth.
  • The business has been impressively efficient. With relatively modest resources, the team has delivered product improvements, grown a loyal customer base and built a high-performing team.

There’s a clear culture of thinking strategically and delivering with focus – something we always look for in companies we back.

Backing the founders

We believe the strength of a business comes down to its people and Semble’s leadership stood out from the start.

Co-founders Christoph and Mikael are second-time founders who understand what it takes to grow a start-up. They’ve brought clarity of vision, hired top talent and shown the ability to execute consistently. We’ve been impressed not only by what they’ve built, but how they’ve done it.

Semble is helping healthcare professionals get back to what matters – their patients. By removing friction from clinical workflows and bringing systems together, they’re creating the digital infrastructure for a more connected, effective and human healthcare system.

We’re proud to support Christoph, Mikael and the team as they continue to scale across the UK, France and beyond.

[1] This has prompted the French government to pass legislation to reduce administrative tasks for GPs and share it amongst other staff. Whilst the UK’s Labour government has launched a plan to tackle the waitlist with greater use of the private sector.
[2] One private practice nurse told us her patients are “one of the three W’s: worried, wealthy or at their wit’s end”.
